Physiological Fitness Assessment of Obese & Non-obese college students (2013)

Department of Physiology, KalyaniMahavidyalaya has a unique platform to organise different health check up programme  in the local community to extent the helping hand of social benefit to the community  for their up-liftment and overall growth and development of the people inhabited in those areas.  The programme is organised by the faculties of the department with the all round help of the college administration and executed by 3rd year B.Sc Physiology (Hons) students.

Presently obesity is an alarming health problem in younger generation throughout the world. Children and adolescence are becoming more obese indicating the current trends which accelerate over time. The main objective of the study was to assess various physiological parameters and dietary patterns to assess their physiological fitness.

Particular parameters under study are:

  • Haemoglobin
  • Random blood glucose level
  • Total blood count & differential count (TC, DC)
  • Blood pressure, heart rate
  • Anthropometric measurement of college students, viz. height, weight, BMI
  • PFI ( Physical Fitness index)
  • Food habits by questionnaire method

Total participants present:  20

Male: 7.        Average age: .19

Female: 13.     Average age: 19

Physiological Fitness and General Health Assessment of School Students (2014)

Physical fitness of a group of school students were assessed by the 3rd year B.Sc. Physiology (Hons) students in a nearby local school. Physical fitness is a general health and well-being or specifically the ability to perform aspects of sports and different occupation.  Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, exercise, hygiene and rest. With our modern lifestyle and food habits physical fitness is now considered a major body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy and fit. Physical activity work for a healthy life since childhood and adolescent.

To assess this the following parameters were tested :

  • Height, weight, BMI.
  • PFI ( Physical Fitness index)
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Respiratory rate

Total participants present:  20 male school students from class IX and X

Health check up programme in Kamarhati Jute Mill (2015)

Health check up camp for jute mill workers was organised by Dept of Physiology, KalyaniMahavidyalaya in a jute mill at Kamarhati, North 24 Parganas. Workers who work in the factory daily for a time period of 8-10 hrs have been included in the study.

Particular parameters under study are:

  • Height, weight, BMI.
  • PFI ( Physical Fitness index)
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Respiratory rate
  • Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR)
  • Maximum Oxygen Uptake (VO2max)

We recommended proper nutritional guidance; proper work-rest cycle, using of mask during work in jute mill, propersupplementation with macro and micronutrients of the daily diet.

Health Check up &Awareness Camp (2016)

Students and faculties of Department of Physiology, KalyaniMahavidyalaya organized a health check up camp and awareness program in Alaipur village, Madanpur. The camp was held at Alaipur Primary School. The Health Check up and awareness program  is one such special initiative to provide healthcare services to meet the immediate health care needs of the marginalized community in remote rural areas.The main objective of this customized health camp was to offer comprehensive health services – curative, preventive, promotive and referral, to a large number of people in selected intervention areas. Specific Goals of the Medical Camp

  • Provide health services to the community
  • Provide both preventive and curative treatment for common conditions in the community
  • Refer those who require specialized treatment as necessary
  • Give health talks on Hypertension, Diabetes, Malnutrition and other ailments
  • Provide information on prevention and management of preventable  diseases
  • Emphasis on the impact of maintaining personal hygiene in prevention of serious disease
  • Encourage use of available nutritious food products in the area.
  • Discourage drug/substance abuse among the community members
  • Emphasis on the impact of maintaining personal hygiene in prevention of dental related problems

Multi-disciplinary projects which were used in this camp included dental, pediatric, general health check up, etc., whereas other interventions were general in nature. The uniqueness of the model lied in its comprehensive approach where health promotion and prevention are given equal importance while curative care was administered.

Furthermore the medical camp provided opportunities to both medical and non medical personnel to give back to the community by way of volunteering their time, energy and expertise. Departmental teachers, students, laboratory attendant spent the whole day serving the needy in various capacities and it is because of the input of everybody who came out to help that the medical camp was a success.

 More than 50 primary school children and about 40 adults of the village were present in the camp. The event started with a medical checkup. General health of the children and adults were checked byDr. AnjanBarik, General Physician and dental health of the school children were assessed by Dr. SouravGhosh, Dentist. Our departmental teachers, laboratory attendant and students kindly volunteered to contribute towards achieving the following objectives:

  • Measurement of pulse, blood pressure, height, weight and BMI.
  • Blood sugar monitoring to screen diabetes.
  • Blood grouping for future haemotological tests.

Awareness Programme on Stroke (2016)

A stroke awareness programme was organized by NSS Unit of  KalyaniMahavidyalaya in Char Birpara village, in Kalyani, where Departmental In-charge of Physiology, Dr. Dolan Das had given a lecture with a documentary film presentation on stroke awareness. The lecture was very much appreciated by the villagers present on the programme  and they clear many of their doubts related to stroke in the interactive session.

Comparative Study on the Relationship Between Physical Fitness of Rural and Urban School Girl children (2016)

Physical fitness and health status of school going girl children (9-10 years old), both rural and urban area, was assessed by the 3rd year honours students of Department of Physiology, KalyaniMahavidyalaya. The study was conducted in one rural school near Madanpur area and in one urban school near Klayani town. Physical fitness during childhood can aid the overall development of a child and lay the foundation of good health. Regular physical activity decreases the risk of health problems among children and adolescents. Different economic and cultural background also have some effect on the general fitness and health of children. To find whether any difference is there, the students along with the help of the teachers assessed the following physiological parameters.

  • Resting Heart rate

Total participants present:  20

  • Urban girl student : 10. Average age:  9-11
  • Rural girl student : 10. Average age:  9-11

Health Check up & Awareness Camp (2017)

The Health Camps organized by Department of Physiology, Kalyani Mahavidyalaya  is one such special initiative to provide healthcare services to meet the immediate health care needs of the rural people. The main objective of this health check up and awareness camp was to educate rural people  and make them aware of how to take proper care of their health. This programme is focused towards addressing issues of personal health care, hygiene, and illness prevention to a large number of people in selected intervention areas.

Multi-disciplinary projects which was used in this camp included pre-screening of students for height, weight, skin, eye, dental, cardiac, caries, oral lesions, facial deformities, etc., and general health check up. The uniqueness of the model lied in its comprehensive approach where health promotion and prevention are given equal importance while curative care was administered.

The health check up and awareness camp provided opportunities to students of the department to give back to the community by way of volunteering their time, energy and expertise. Departmental teachers, students, laboratory attendant spent the whole day serving the needy in various capacities and it is because of the input of everybody who came out to help so that the programme was a success.

Comparative Study of Anthropometric and Basic Physiological Parameters of Pre and Post Menopausal Women in a rural area  (2017)

Body composition changes become evident as women transition through menopause. Anthropometry is an adaptable, portable, non-invasive and affordable technique and very useful in field study. A study was designed to assessed the physical and physiological health of rural pre and post menopausal women. 3rd year honours students along with the departmental teachers and laboratory attendant went to a village and selected women of age group between 20 to 52 years. They were divided into two groups according to their age, one group with normal menstrual cycle and other with menopause. Basic anthropometric parameters and few physiological parameters like blood pressure, heart rate haemoglobin content and random blood glucose level was measured in both groups of females.
