DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

KALYANI MAHAVIDYALAYA

The department of Political Science has been introduced as a general course in 1999, since establishment of the college. Considering the increasing strength of the students studying political science in the schools of the hinterland, the college has introduced honours course in 2010. The department is to include students of multiple character in terms of socio economic profile and family background. Some of the students are from poor families and backward castes along with rich and elite classes. The college along with the department has to play a special role in advancement of the poor and backward students and the slow learners for example, remedial coaching, supplying of study materials etc. The college library enriched with equipped staffs, valuable books and other apparatus is an effective support base for both students and teachers. The departmental library also extends support to the students in addition to the service offered by the digitized central library of the college. Apart from study, the students of the department are associated with community services and extension activities; academic events like seminars, special lectures; cultural activities; different competitions like youth parliament competition, essay competitions etc. Among the mention worthy achievements by the students of the department, there are university topper, assistant professor, net/set qualifiers and state aided college teachers. Organized efforts of students, teachers and college authority have brought the department of political science in the lime light.

Since the students of the department are coming from different socio-economic background some of the students suffer from discomfort and uneasiness so far classroom environment, teaching method, etc. are concerned. Departmental teachers are very much sensitive about such feelings and try to handle the less-expressive students carefully. Most of the students are coming from Bengali medium schools with poor writing, reading, and communicative skill in English. In order to motivate them and to make them habituated in English language teachers try to deliver class lectures through bilingual medium.

Remedial classes are arranged for the slow learners. Teachers are very careful to understand the weakness or the limitations of the slow learners and guide them to overcome their limitations towards the improvement of the result.

Advanced learners are suggested to consult reference books more vastly. Apart from the class lectures they are asked to go through e-sources on the related topic. keeping in mind the demand of the subject, teachers take initiatives to make the students updated so for national and international socio-political issues and scenario are concerned. Teachers encourage the students to express their mind and view independently on any relevant topic. Face to face discussion, informal debate on any given topic is followed within the classroom to make the students of the department more enriched in the subject.  Latent potentiality and skill of some students are explored through such method.
