The Department of Political Science

The department of Political Science was introduced as a general course in 1999 since the establishment of the college. The department included students of multiple characters in terms of socio-economic profile and family background of the students. Students representing the department were from poor family and backward castes along with rich and elite classes. The college and the department have to play a special role in the advancement of the poor and backward students along with the comparatively affluent students. Considering the increasing strength of the students studying political science in the schools of the hinterland, the college introduced honours course in 2010. Having many limitations, determination of the students, teachers and other employees of the college enabled the department to secure topper in honours from its students in the Kalyani University undergraduate examination in 2013. Intake capacity of honours students in the department at present stands 66 (Sixty Six). The department is run by one full time teacher and five guest teachers. The college library enriched with equipped staffs, valuable books and other apparatus is an effective support base for both students and teachers. The Departmental Library with its unique collection extends support to the students in addition to the services offered by the Central Library of the College. Apart from study the students of the department are associated with community service and extension activities. Along with cultural activities like Nabin baran and teachers’ day academic events like seminar, symposium and different competitions are undertaken. Considering the economic and social backwardness of the hinterland of the town, the department extends its full effort for organizing remedial coaching of weaker students. Organized efforts of students, teachers and college authority have brought the department of political science in the limelight.
