History

Kalyani Mahavidyalaya was founded at Kalyani, a satellite town around 45 km from Kolkata in the summer of 1999. It was founded to meet a long standing demand of the residents of Kalyani for a general degree college. Thus the then Govt. of West Bengal, the University of Kalyani, the local educationists, the enthusiasts and the citizens of Kalyani and its vicinity put their acts together to lay the foundation of this college. Presently, the college not only serves the residents of Kalyani but also the residents of the adjacent districts of Hooghly, North 24 Parganas etc.

During its initial years the classes were held in the B T College Campus of the University of Kalyani; however, by 2004-05 the classes shifted to its own campus at the centre of the city. Since then, the college has been regularly upgrading its physical infrastructure for the benefit of the students, staffs, and stakeholders. Right now, the college is spread across an area of 3.5 acres approx., having a main and an annex building with an open air stage, two playgrounds-one large and one relatively small, and a site for hostel.

The first batch of students graduated from the college in 2002 with flying colours. Inspite of being the youngest college in terms of age, almost all the departments had students who were placed in the merit list of the University of Kalyani. Since then the college has effortlessly maintained its excellent academic record not only among the colleges affiliated to the University of Kalyani but also among the rest of the colleges in West Bengal.

Not only in academics but also in the field of Sports and Cultural activities the college has immense potential and is gradually living up to it.  Annual Sports and Cultural events are held with much enthusiasm with active participation of the students and staffs. Our students win intra-college and inter college sports and cultural competitions on a regular basis. Our students also participate and win various Sporting events at the District, State and even National level on a regular basis too.

Besides, the college boasts of an active, persistent and sincere National Social Service Unit which has been striving to bring about a qualitative change in the lives of the people in the surrounding, especially among the poor and the deprived over last decade and half. There is a running NCC unit too which also wins accolades nationally.

With enviable infrastructure, dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff, able leadership of the Principal and the management, and above all a bunch of enthusiastic students with immense potential, the college has grown from strength to strength over the last twenty five years. With Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity as its core values and the light of knowledge as its fundamental principal the college seeks to build the base of this great nation. Let a thousand flowers bloom, we don’t even mind the weeds.
