UG CBCS Honours

The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is a flexible system of learning that allows students to choose from a variety of courses (core, elective, or skill-based) and accumulate credits. It is designed to provide students with a multidisciplinary education and a greater degree of autonomy in their learning. Here is an overview of the CBCS course structure typically offered in an undergraduate college:

1. Core Courses

  •   Mandatory Courses: These are essential courses that students must take in their honours subject or discipline.

2. Elective Courses

  •  Discipline-Specific Electives (DSE): Courses related to the student's honours course but it is mandatory. They provide deeper insights or specialization in certain areas.
  •  Generic Electives (GE): Courses that can be chosen from any discipline other than the student's honours core course. This promotes interdisciplinary learning.

3. Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC)

  • These are value-based and skill-based courses designed to enhance students' employability and entrepreneurial skills. They cover areas such as computer applications, data analysis and as specified by the University of Kalyani.

4. Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC)

  • Environmental Science: A compulsory course focusing on environmental issues and sustainability.
  • English/MIL Communication: Courses that aim to improve communication skills in English or a Modern Indian Language (MIL).

5. Additional Features

  • Credit System: Each course is assigned a certain number of credits based on the number of instructional hours.
  • Continuous Evaluation: Students are assessed through various methods such as assignments, presentations, mid-term exams, and end-term exams.
  • Flexibility: Students can choose courses based on their interests and career goals, leading to a personalized learning experience.
  • Transfer of Credits: Allows for the transfer of credits from one institution to another, facilitating student mobility.

This structure ensures a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing students for both higher studies and employment. The specific courses and credits may vary across institutions and disciplines.

CBCS Programme Course

Choice Based Credit Systemallows students to choose courses from a range of core, elective, and skill-based options, enabling a more personalized education tailored to individual interests and career goals. The general components and structure of a CBCS undergraduate program are as follows:

Components of a CBCS Program

  • Core Courses: These are mandatory courses that form the foundation of the student's chosen discipline. They are essential for gaining a thorough understanding of the subject.
  • Elective Courses: These courses allow students to explore other areas of interest beyond their core subjects. They can be discipline-specific (related to the student's major) or interdisciplinary (from other fields).
  • Skill Enhancement Courses: These are designed to develop practical skills and competencies, such as communication skills, subject related practical skills etc.
  • Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC): These are compulsory courses aimed at enhancing a student's abilities in areas such as environmental studies and English communication.
  • Discipline-Specific Electives (DSE): These electives are specific to the student's major discipline and offer advanced knowledge in particular areas of interest.
  • Generic Electives (GE): These are courses from other disciplines, promoting interdisciplinary learning and providing broader knowledge and perspective.
  • Project Work/Dissertation: Some programs include a mandatory project or dissertation, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical problems and research.

Structure of a CBCS Program

  • A typical CBCS undergraduate program is spread over six semesters (three years) or eight semesters (four years), depending on the country and the specific institution. The structure usually includes:
  • Semester System: The academic year is divided into two semesters, each lasting around 16-18 weeks. Each semester includes a set number of courses, evaluated through continuous assessment and end-semester exams.
  • Credit System: Each course is assigned a certain number of credits based on the number of instructional hours per week. Typically, one credit corresponds to one hour of teaching per week.
  • Grading System: The CBCS adopts a grading system instead of the traditional marking system. Grades are awarded based on the student's performance in assessments, and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated at the end of each semester.

New Education Policy 2020

The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in India introduced several reforms for undergraduate education aimed at improving the quality of education and making it more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, aligned with the needs of the 21st century, and rooted in Indian values and ethos. The Syllabus made by the University of Kalyani in compliance with the proposed syllabus of UGC touch the following points:

  • Multidisciplinary Approach: The NEP emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, allowing students to choose subjects from different streams. This is intended to provide a broad-based education and develop well-rounded individuals.
  • Flexible Curriculum: The policy introduces flexibility in the curriculum, enabling students to select courses based on their interests and career goals. This includes the provision for multiple entry and exit points within the duration of the program.
  • Multiple Entry and Exit Options: Students can exit a degree program at various stages with a certificate, diploma, or degree. For example, exiting after the first year will lead to a certificate, after the second year will lead to a diploma, and completing the entire program will lead to a degree.
  • Four-Year Undergraduate Program: The traditional three-year undergraduate program will be replaced by a four-year multidisciplinary bachelor’s program with multiple exit options. The four-year program will have the option of research and shall lead to a degree ‘with Research’ if the student completes a rigorous research project.
  • Credit Transfer System: The Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) will be established to digitally store the academic credits earned from different HEIs so that they can be transferred and counted towards the final degree.
  • Focus on Holistic and Multidisciplinary Education: The policy aims to develop creative combinations of subjects and offer multiple options of learning tracks. It emphasizes the importance of liberal arts education by including humanities and arts subjects for science students and vice versa.
  • Integration of Vocational Education: The NEP plans to integrate vocational education into undergraduate education to provide students with practical skills and enhance their employability.
  • Skill Development: Emphasis on skill development and practical knowledge, alongside traditional academic learning. Internships and apprenticeships will be encouraged.
  • Emphasis on Indian Languages: The policy encourages the use of Indian languages in undergraduate education, ensuring that language is not a barrier to learning.
  • Technology in Education: Increased use of technology in teaching and learning processes, including the use of online courses and digital platforms to supplement traditional classroom teaching.
  • Research and Innovation: Emphasis on promoting research and innovation at the undergraduate level, with dedicated research funding and opportunities for undergraduate students.
