About

The History Department of Kalyani Mahavidyalaya offers good academic environments for Indian Historical Studies and the World. The Department focuses on teaching history from prehistoric times till the modern period of India, European history from medieval age till the twentieth century, and world history for the twentieth century. The faculty members of the department mainly focus India’s interactions with the Islamic world and the Europe as well. All the eight papers in three year degree programme touch the area of Ancient India, Medieval India, Modern India, Rise of the Modern West, European history including International Relations, History of China and Japan with especial discussion on the transition period in Indian History. The CBCS system that has been initiated from the academic session of 2018 onward includes the history of world and Indian history through the ages finding the links of historical facts. The teaching-learning process focuses on conversations and contest between early modern Indian, Indo-Islamic and European intellectual traditions; ideas of kingship, theology, political legitimating and governance in South Asia and the British Empire; socio-religious studies of India and Islamic tradition. Apart from having these specific academic objectives, the broader aim of the Department is to help students to become socially-aware citizens so that they can use the conceptual resources provided by the study of the distant as well as proximate past for better understanding the universe around them, and to negotiate with that world in a socially responsible manner. 

The Mission of the Department

  • Produce excellent scholars that pushes the boundaries of historical inquiry.
  • To develop among the students the sense of research, writing, and teaching skills that make them competitive for academic and non-academic positions across the nation.
  • Educate undergraduate students and help them develop their own analytical and communication skills which may serve them well in whatever they choose to do.
  • Reach out to the public,  to advance its understanding of history and to encourage an appreciation for historical thinking along with discover local history.
