About Physics

Essentially, physics is the study of the entire universe. From studying stars far beyond the earth, to explaining the shape of a water droplet, Physics degrees offer students the chance to understand the world around them in all its enormity and complexity. Physics is the most fundamental discipline in natural Sciences and the foundation of most of the inventions in engineering and technology. It explores many of the deeper mysteries of the Universe and can lead to a wide range of careers and employment opportunities. The mission of Physics is to comprehend the physical phenomena in the Universe in terms of a few “Universal Laws”.  The first monumental work in this direction was the “Newton’s Laws”. These Laws allowed to explain not only the motion of terrestrial objects but also the planetary motion. It was the ingenuity of Einstein who showed that these laws have limited applicability and developed the acclaimed “Theory of Relativity”.  This theory describes the large scale structures of Universe and then we had “Quantum Mechanics” that rules the atomic world.  Presently, the most outstanding problem in Physics is to unify these two apparently contradictory theories.

Great physicists who played a role in identifying the natural laws and theories that underlie modern scientific understandings of the world include Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei, Erwin Schrodinger, Sir Isaac Newton and Max Planck – and those now choosing to study Physics could be among the next generation of revolutionary thinkers in the field. Although the subject has a reputation for being detached from everyday applications, physicists in fact play major roles in many key sectors, including many aspects of technology and engineering.

About the Department

The Department of Physics in Kalyani Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 2004. The department was set up essentially as a general subject for the Mathematics and Computer Science honours students. Gradually the department started growing and enormous demand of the subject led the college to start the B.Sc. (Honours)  course in Physics in the year 2014. With the initiation of this course the physics department acquired very good quality and high standard experimental apparatus and highly sensitive testing and measuring devices with the pioneering efforts of the college authority. At present the department has one fulltime and several guest faculties and one lab attendant.

Mission

  • To provide opportunities for students to appreciate the beauty of physics and to develop a desire of learning.
  • To motivate basic/academic and applied research in technologically important fields.
  • To develop the systematic and analytical perspective of thinking so as to be capable of competing in the changing scenario.
  • To blend theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
  • To encourage students to develop skills to achieve professional carriers in Physics.

Vision

To achieve excellence in education and research in the field of Physical Sciences for the recognition of an energetic and inclusive society through knowledge creation and dissemination.

Best Practices

Audio-visual teaching using LCD projector is made to teach various topics .

Along with the central library, the department is equipped with a departmental library.

Student’s performance is evaluated by class tests.

Students are encouraged to prepare wall-magazine posters etc. which are displayed in the department.

Students seminar is organized by the department.
