Mol. Biology & Bio Technology Departments

About

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBBT) at Kalyani Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 2004. The main objective of starting this department was to cater to the ever-increasing academic needs of students in the broad area of Genetic engineering and Biotechnology. Candidates having strong foundation of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level, who are extremely keen to explore the area of applied biological sciences, should, opt for the 4-yr B.Sc. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NEP-Major) course in this department. The department always strives to achieve excellence by maximum utilization of available resources, identifying lacunae and overcoming limitations. In this connection, it would be pertinent to mention that the former students of this department have fared extremely well in various national and state level examinations. The Department also boasts to be the home for Toppers in B.Sc. (Hons) examination of Kalyani University consistently for the past few years.

The MBBT department offers a very cordial and homely atmosphere allowing ample scope for continuous dialogue between students and highly qualified, experienced, and passionate faculty members. The department strives to resolve the academic and personal concerns of students in the timelymanner, keeping professional ethics in perspective. It tries to nurture a healthy and strong mind amongst students, which is free from maladies but well prepared to cope with stress that they would encounter in the professional world. The Division is in the process of regularizing scientific visits for students on a yearly basis to expose them to the frontier areas of scientific and industrial research. Also, everyone eagerly waits for the annual departmental cultural programme which provides students with opportunities to display their artistic and musical talents permeated with scientific insight. It turns out be a splendid show of performing arts in the most befitting manner possible. In short, all-round development of mental faculties along with improvement of scientific acumen is of prime concern to this department.

Vision:

Biotechnology, as the name suggests is an Interdisciplinary subject, a dynamic, fast growing and evolving field in science with promising prospects for research-oriented employment across the globe. Keeping this in perspective, the department aims to develop trained manpower equipped with appropriate skills and positive mindset to compete and secure coveted positions in this heavily demanding Biotechnology job market.

Mission:

Biotechnology is a frontline area of science having immense potential for the benefit of the human kind. It spans diverse fields ranging from Agriculture to food processing, Pharmaceuticals to personalized medicine. As evident, people trained in Biotechnology have career opportunities in both public and private sectors. Biotechnology students in India may find work in government-based entity such as universities, research institutes or at private centers as research scientists/ teachers or associates. Alternatively, they may seek employment in specialized biotechnology companies such as pharmaceutical firms, food manufacturing units, aquaculture and agricultural companies that are engaged in business related to life sciences ranging from equipment to chemicals to pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. The scope of work can range from teaching, research, sales, marketing, administration, quality control, animal breeding, technical support etc. The Department shall devote wholly to achieve excellence in the promotion of Biotechnology by:

  • Providing quality education, which would establish a strong foundation for understanding developments in the rapidly advancing fields of molecular biology, genetics, genomics, medical and microbial biotechnology etc with adequate exposure to recent trends in development of new biochemical technologies, products and therapeutic approaches.
  • Creating graduates competent in thrust areas such as Bioprocess Engineering, Genetic Engineering & Applications, Bioinformatics, Industrial Biotechnology and Bio-pharmaceutics.
  • Sensitizing students about protection of Intellectual Property Rights associated with generation of novel commercial products by value addition to indigenous bio-resources.
  • Alerting students about Bio-ethical principles concerned with the unprecedented use of recombinant DNA technology in exploiting natural resources which might pose unforeseen risks to the environment including risks to biodiversity.
  • Inculcating in them the habit of following Good laboratory Practices essential for safe Biotechnology research.
  • Motivating students to pursue higher studies and subsequent research in applied biology by qualifying the National Eligibility Tests and securing Research Fellowships from various National Level funding agencies such as CSIR, DBT, ICMR, DST, DRDO, ICAR, DAE etc.
  • Finally, by providing the nation with highly trained professionals who can implement the scientific principles for continuous improvement of safe, high quality value-added biotechnological services and products leading to sustainable development of the nation.
